As a high school teacher, I must say that I am wary of many new additions to the young adult genre. Common Ground is an exception to the overly dramatic, stereotypical characters one usually finds in those books. Zoe is a complex, interesting protagonist. Although she does fit into some archetypes (orphan, introvert), she stands out because this story is so different from what one might expect. Zoe may begin the story as a normal high school graduate who is about to attend college, but the story shifts in a very cool and unexpected direction.Although the story starts off with a lot of exposition (as many other reviewers mentioned), it is necessary for Chaison to do this in first book to set up the trilogy. I am looking forward to Zoe's journey in books two and three, and will definitely read them, in addition to recommending them to my students.*
*This book can safely be recommended to high-school age students and up. This story is not chaste, but it also doesn't go into excessive detail about adult sexual situations.

Opened my appetite for the other two books. Nice easy read.
Exciting read. It really keeps your interest!
Admittedly this type of book really isn't my thing. I read it on the recommendation of a friend and I have to say, this book does everything right! The story is compelling and exciting. The author paints a very vivid picture without slowing down the story. The ending is both satisfying but still leaves you hanging. It sets up what is sure to be an exciting trilogy, and has characters that you genuinely care about. I can't wait to read the next two books!
The book started out very slow, but picked up momentum until the final chapter. It would be worth buying dubsequent books in the series.
Overall, the concept and writers descriptive style provide good imagery of the story, but this book seriously took forever to go anywhere. It was about 2/3 the way through when some pieces started to be put together, but by the end of the book, you honestly don't know that much more. The "climax" of the book was a little lackadaisical and the end just kinda left me hanging. Overall the author writes and sets moods appropriately, but moves very slowly through the story.
For those that are interested, this book is about the same as a lower PG-13 movie. Some swear words here and there. Sexual topics kept appropriate despite the college age of the characters. A little more than usual about drinking and alcohol.
Chaison bursts onto the scene with the first book in the Common Ground trilogy. From start to finish, I found it difficult to put the book down and always wondered, what will happen next? Chaison does a great job developing the characters, allowing the reader to relate to and invest themselves in each one's storyline. This book is great for readers that enjoy suspense, intrigue, and fast-paced action, with a supernatural twist! Definitely a must read from an up and coming author. Can't wait for the second book to come out!
The Common Ground is a well written novel with a one of a kind plot that can keep readers on the edge of their seats. I'm sure it was challenging writing from a female perspective, but he more than pulls it off. The last page of each chapter leaves the reader eager to turn the page and start the next chapter, even if you should have been asleep hours ago and you have to be up early. Barry strategically places details throughout the book that make the reader think, and he never leaves questions unanswered, even if it's 5 chapters down the road. I would recommend this book to any and every young adult/adult.
