I like this story, and the interesting thing is that, as I began reading it, I didn't think I would. At the tale's outset, the reader meets a contemporary medical doctor, new to Wyoming, and his elderly patient, who serves as the zeitgeist for her generation in a hardscrabble world. Lucy Morgan is cantankerous and independent, but kind. Fortunately, Hawley doesn't settle for the stereotype. Her character has depths, eddies, and unseen currents, which reveal themselves in the major portion of the work--a flashback, which carries us from her younger self to the present. I think I began really to enjoy the book when I sensed that this was not just another recounting of an eccentric old lady. What Hawley provides us is the look and feel and spirit of a people living out their ordinary, everyday lives; however, the work reminded me a great deal of Thornton Wilder's creations in which we discover that there is a sacredness and meaning to human life, no matter how humble, which is unfathomable and beautiful, and which connects us all. One reviewer has called Hawley's style "understated". True enough, but there is a texture and rhythm in it that ultimately penetrates and nurtures an emotional reaction. Honestly, by the time I finished the story, I was touched and moved, and I wanted more, and that's primarily the reason for a rating of four instead of five stars. Maybe, instead of abrupt transitions, I wanted longer segues to support and frame the essential experiences, but those are merely personal preferences. Read the book; you'll like it. There is an honesty in the narrative that will transfix you.Product details
